Just a Little Light

Light. God called us to be light to a lost world.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Matthew 5:16

Have you ever been in darkness? Have you ever come out of darkenss and into a lighted place? The longer you have been in the dark, the harder it is for your eyes to adjust to light. Bright, abrupt light blinds us and causes us to recoil. What we want is just a little light...enough so that we can see what surrounds us...that light is good.

I believe this is true in the spiritual world too. Make no mistake, life without Christ is dark. There is no hope. However, for those in the darkness, it envelopes them and is everything they know. They can't see the dangers or even the good things that lay around them. Their eyes are adjusted to the darkness.

As light bearers, we are accustomed to living in the full light of Christ. We know the joy of basking in His light. But are we aware of how we shine our light? Do we require that those in darkness step out of the dark and into the daylight...in one giant step? Or do we allow our light to shine as a candle first, just loving people, serving them and allowing them to see that light is good?

The world can embrace this kind of light. It is warm, it is comforting. It does not blind them and cause them to recoil back into darkness. And, when a lost soul sees this small light, it will begin to seek more. It will wonder where the source of this true light comes from. And slowly, we can add more light. Slowly by loving people, they realize they can have the same light and love and peace that we have. The more we serve and love them, the brighter His light can shine. And eventually, one day, some may step into the Son shine with you and embrace His warmth, peace and love. Some may not. Some will choose to only watch your candle burn...but even so, they will see that light. They will know Light exists. And perhaps, someday, they will follow another light bearer to the real Light. And when they do, they will be ready for that Light. They will be able to embrace Him and then reflect His light to another.

How is your light? Are you blinding people with your abruptness? Or are you a gentle flame that grows as a soul grows and needs more and more of the Light you have?
Remember, the verse says, "Let your light so shine..." Let your light shine in such a way that it draws men to Christ's perfect light. Allow Him to shine through you and use you in just the right brightness so that the world sees Him and begins to yearn for His light.

  1. doesn't it make you think of the pre-school
song; "this little light of mine" ??
not gonna let the devil poof it out :) -
nor am i gonna let someone else put it under
a bushel. my light is my responsibility to
keep lit, to keep guard over, to share with
someone else in the darkness of this journey.
i approach it with fear and trembling .
love you guys, thanks for the liftin words.

  2. Ronna,
Such great thoughts! I definitely think that many of us have often looked at putting a big spot light on the sinner instead of showing a little light that calls to them. You are awesome.
